Preserving the privacy of individuals is both a research topic and a professional responsibility of members of the Knowledge Discovery Laboratory. In data sets that we analyze for our research, data on individuals is either public (e.g., the authorship of technical papers in high-energy physics) or it is obscured by the providers of the data in ways that render individuals anonymous for the purposes of our analysis (e.g., in data we are analyzing for the U.S. Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine).
